Rio Rancho is located atop the West Mesa, overlooking Albuquerque. Today, beautiful vistas a great place to live, and affordable housing attract many people. In fact, the attractive residential community of Rio Rancho is known as America's "fastest growing small city," with a population increase from 32,500 in 1990 to over 50,000 by the year 2000.
Locally-based Intel corporation helps provide a strong local economy, and other attractions include a fine local golf course, museums, and a large ice-skating complex, as well as nearby Coronado Monument.
Local events such as Valentine's Day Weekend Balloon Rally each February, and the Rio Rancho SpringFest in May, with its open-air music and food are popular. The annual All American Soap Box Derby held in June draws hundreds of fans, and the area also celebrates an old-fashioned 4th of July, and a "Twinkle Lights Parade" early in the Christmas season.
