Placitas is located about half an hour north of Albuquerque, In the foothills of the Sandia Mountains. Homessites in Placitas offer more land, bigger homes and a continuity of architectural style (Pueblo and Territorial designs are the most prevalent). Founded in 1745, the area was initially a large tract of land divided among 21 families, many of whose descendants still live in the area. Today, Placitas is a quiet, low-density residential community offering spectacular views day or night.
Placitas is a picturesque village, with open spaces, magnificent views, and little commercial development. There is a small shopping center, with a bank and a few stores, and there is a restaruant in Placitas. For other commercial needs, however, residents must venture to the nearby town of Benalillo, the county seat, or into Albuquerque.
Residents of Placitas are intent on preserving the area's charm, and have no interest in emulating the enormous growth of neighboring Rio RAncho. Residents fear that increased traffic and water usage that would be caused by development would have a negative effect on their quiet and peaceful community.
